Sitting on a hill which rises in the centre of a plain, surrounded by high ground, the town of Monterchi is the first Tuscan outpost you meet as you cross Valtiberina Toscana from Città di Castello towards Arezzo. We can be sure of the origins of Monterchi from the 11th century, but it probably existed in the pre-Christian age.

The town walls are still in a good state of conservation, despite a big earthquake in 1917, the historic centre has maintained much of its medieval past. It has always been famous all over the world due to the Madonna del Parto, famous fresco by Piero della Francesca to which a museum has been dedicated, Monterchi has an interesting historic centre and the surrounding countryside has many small churches and rural towns.
